Demystifying the College Baseball Recruiting process
WANT TO PLAY COLLEGE BASEBALL? The odds of playing college ball can be daunting, but you can GREATLY INCREASE YOUR ODDS if you understand the recruiting process. Start your journey here.
If you want to play college baseball, this substack is for you.
Consider this sobering fact — In an average year, approximately 115,000 high school seniors are competing for 13,400 spots on college teams created by players being drafted or graduating out of their college program.
This means that of those 115,000 high school seniors, 11.6% will move on to play college baseball, and 88.4% will NOT.
But, you can be one of those 11.6% of players who earn a spot on a college baseball roster if you understand the recruiting process and — more importantly — understand exactly how to realistically assess and establish the level at which schools WILL forecast you can play, and the schools and or programs who ARE looking for players just like you.
Why is this Substack needed?
I’ve helped HUNDREDS of high school baseball players realize their dream of being a college athlete playing baseball in college. Unfortunately, though, it doesn’t work out for everyone. I see very good high school baseball players fail to get to the college level because they simply didn’t understand the recruiting process.
They don’t understand that just being a good player isn’t enough.
They don’t understand how college coaches evaluate prospective players.
They don’t understand which level of college baseball is the best fit for them — and they don’t know how to accurately evaluate themselves to determine that — so they spend their time pursuing schools that are not a realistic fit for them.
That means they don’t understand why some colleges show interest while others don’t (or worse, no colleges show interest).
Even worse, because they don’t understand the process, it prevents them from having a realistic plan to help them get recruited.
I want to teach players and families to understand the process of recruiting, and how to take advantage of it.
Understanding the baseball recruiting process from A-to-Z can mean the difference between being recruited or not being recruited. Just focusing on “exposure” won’t cut it. You need to understand what happens, when it happens, and why it happens. You need to know timing for every step of the process — what to expect, what to do, what not to do, what matters and what doesn’t. Bottom line, knowing exactly what you need to do, how you need to do it, and when you need to do it is a critical part of recruiting success.
So, I want to teach high school baseball players and middle school baseball players (and their parents) how the recruiting process works, step-by-step, and help them maximize their chances of getting recruited and playing college baseball.
I’ve seen this process play out hundreds of times, so I know how it works.
I’ve coached baseball for more than four decades. Along the way, I’ve had thousands of conversations with college coaches about players, and I’ve seen hundreds of players go through the recruiting process. I’ve seen players succeed, and I’ve seen worthy, talented players fail to find a place on a college roster.
I have learned this — If you want your odds of succeeding at being recruited to be significantly higher, you need to understand the recruiting process and proactively work the process.
For many players who fail to get recruited, I saw that it’s usually not a matter of skill or talent; it’s more often a matter of not having the knowledge to take advantage of the recruiting process.
it’s that simple.
What can you expect if you subscribe?
You can expect weekly posts about the recruiting process. I’ll do my best to keep you current about policy and rules changes, update you on trends or news, and keep you in the know about everything dealing with college baseball recruiting.
Is this information you could find for yourself?
Perhaps, but remember — this is the culmination of 40+ years of experience in dealing with college recruiting coordinators and head coaches, and of seeing hundreds of my players go through the process and move on to play in college.
So, could you learn all this on your own? I’m sure you could, but it would take a while, and remember — importantly — that your recruiting clock is running:
If you are in middle school, this is the time to educate yourself on the recruiting process and begin building your plan to help yourself get recruited.
If you are a freshman, you have a very specific timeline that has begin, and there are specific things you should be doing .
Likewise, if you are a sophomore, there are things that you should be doing,
If you are a junior your list is different, and the sense of urgency begins to pick up, with a very specific list of tasks you must do to maximize your recruiting efforts.
If you are a senior, it’s not too late — not at all — but there is no time to waste, and your approach will be much different than if you were a junior.
And those aren’t the only factors driving expected timing for recruiting. As a prospect, you will typically fit in one of four categories — Phenom, Top Prospect, Typical Player, or Late Bloomer. Your timing for your recruiting process will change depending on which of those categories you are in.
Remember these three things about college baseball recruiting:
It is a PROCESS.
You have to UNDERSTAND the process to boost your odds of succeeding.
You have to be PROACTIVE.
